On January 5, 2019, At 5:45 a.m., the Clinton Fire Department’s on-duty crew responded to a reported smoldering fire in a silo storage bin at Archer-Daniels-Midland loading facility. At 7:00 a.m., the scene was handed off to the next crew coming on-duty which included Lieutenant Eric M. Hosette. Nearly two hours later at 8:45 a.m., Lieutenant Hosette, 33, was injured in an explosion at the scene. Lieutenant Eric M. Hosette was transported to Mercy Medical Center where, despite all efforts, he passed away. A second firefighter was critically injured during the explosion but survived.

At approximately 2:40 p.m. on October. 20, 2018, Fire Chief Tom Henrich, 58, responded with Earling Fire and Rescue Department units to a combine and field fire. While on scene, Chief Henrich fell ill. CPR was administered and Chief Henrich was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased. An autopsy is pending to determine the official cause of death.

Firefighter Steven Paul Buser, 51, finished working his shift at 0700hrs on March 17, 2017, during which he responded to an emergency call at 1900hrs on March 16, 2017. After his shift, Firefighter Buser stayed at the fire station to exercise where he was alone. At 0930hrs, someone entered the fire station and found Firefighter Buser unresponsive. Firefighter Buser was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced deceased from a nature and cause of fatal injury still to be reported.

Firefighter James Franciskovich, 52. on February 24 at 1805hrs, succumbed to injuries sustained when the fire department vehicle he was a passenger in lost control on an ice and snow covered roadway then crashed, coming to a rest on its top. Firefighter Franciskovich, who was reported to have not been wearing seat restraints, was ejected from the vehicle. Two other firefighters traveling with Firefighter Franciskovich to the State Fire School in Ames, Iowa, were reported to have been wearing seat restraints and received only minor injuries in the crash.

Fire Engineer Douglas McCauley, 59, suffered a significant medical event while on duty Friday, February 10th. Engineer McCauley was treated and transported by fellow firefighters and paramedics from the scene to Iowa Methodist Unity Point where he succumbed to his injury the following morning on February 11, 2017 at 1039hrs.. The nature and cause of fatal injury are still to be determined.

Assistant Fire Chief Mike "Coop" Cooper, 61, died at home from a nature and cause of fatal injury still to be determined several hours after being released from the scene of a large structure fire in a commercial occupancy on January 30, 2015 at 1930hrs..
