Two Phoenix Firefighters Burned; Structural Fire Glendale AZ - 11.12.14

GLENDALE, AZ
Phoenix and Glendale Fire Department, with about 25 firefighters, responded to a house fire at 5 p.m. Wednesday. The two-story  vacant home is located at 6024 N. 47th Ave. West near 47th Ave. & Bethany Home Road in Glendale.

Flames coming from many parts of the house sent huge clouds of smoke into the air. Firefighting crews were seen pulling siding off of the house to gain access to the interior to gain control of the fire.

On arrival, Phoenix firefighters tackled the flames with an offensive approach, meaning crews tried to combat the fire from the inside while looking for anyone who may have been in the house.

Firefighters seemed to have contained and under controlled the blaze by 5:30 p.m.. 

Glendale Fire Chief Mark Burdick described the fire as an intense blaze that caused items being stored in and around the structure to go up in flames.

No one was inside the house, and Burdick said it was possibly a situation where the resident had been hoarding.



Two Phoenix firefighters were rushed to Maricopa Medical Center with burns suffered while battling a house blaze on Wednesday evening in Glendale, according to fire officials. 

One of the firefighters suffered first-and second-degree burns to his legs, abdomen, arms and hands. The other firefighter suffered first-and second-degree burns to his arms and hands.

The one injured firefighter was badly burned but alert and speaking to colleagues while on the way to the Phoenix trauma hospital's burn unit, said Danny Senese, a Glendale Fire Department spokesman.

"We always approach these situations knowing that there's a certain amount of danger. It's a hazardous occupation," said Ron Hart with the Glendale Fire Department. "However, that's what the community asks of us and that we will risk our own lives to save others."

The cause of the fire is not yet known. A fire investigator remains on the scene of the vacant house which burned trying to determine the cause.

Roof Collapse During Home Fire; Jacksonville Florida - 11.11.14

JACKSONVILLE, Fla.
The Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department responded to reports of a house fire in the 1900 block of Phoenix Avenue about 10:30 a.m.  Tuesday morning.

It was reported that two people living in the home were able to egress out of the house  safely.

"There was heavy fire and smoke conditions," said Chief Adrian Johnson, the incident commander, "Smoke was pushed out of the building. The roof started to sag and walls were pushed out." A dozen local firefighters are safe and uninjured thanks to the quick thinking of their Fire Chief.

No one was injured due to the actions of incident commander Chief Adrian Johnson and the other district chiefs on scene, Fire Chief Martin Senterfitt said.

"This type of fire -- across the nation -- typically can be a firefighter killer," Fire Chief Martin Senterfitt said. "... Roof collapse is one of the things we fear the most."

The last firefighter left the building about 90 seconds before parts of the roof collapsed.

Firefighters were able to get the fire under control but the roof did collapse during the incident. Firefighters also had to employ defensive tactics to protect surrounding property as they could no longer go into the home and directly fight the fire.

No one was hurt in the fire or during firefighting operations.

The State Fire Marshal is investigating.

Smoke Detectors Helps Family Escape; House Fire Cheektowaga New York - 11.11.14

ERIE COUNTY, N.Y.
U-Crest Fire Department firefighters were called to respond and fight  a fire at 3:15 a.m. Tuesday morning, to a two-story house on 77 Leni Lane in Cheektowaga New York.

The fire was reported that it started in the bathroom ceiling and spread from there.

All five family members escaped from the house fire safely thanks to working smoke detectors inside the home that woke up all in time to egress the structure. The home fire is an example of another instance when smoke detectors saved lives. Working smoke detectors helped with an early warning that allowed all to leave their home safely.

Firefighters were able to put out the house fire and had the flames under control after about an hour after arriving on scene.

The investigation into the fire is still ongoing.

Backdraft at Worcester Fire 11.08.14

WORCESTER, Mass. - Firefighters responded to 46 Lafayette Street around 12:30 a.m. where they arrived to heavy fire condition coming from the back of the 4-story building.

Firefighters on the fireground coming up to the third floor of the building were caught by a backdraft explosion that caused flames to be blown about 30 feet across the street. Four or five emergency responders were blown down stairs. The backdraft blew out all the top floor windows, but no one was injured and everyone made it safely out of the building.

"We saw the pop and the window just flew out and landed on top of a blue vehicle  that was outside," said Doreen Ramos, who lives across the street from where the fire took place. "You could hear the wood crackling, it was scary and you heard the glass pop, literally pop out."



As firefighters were climbing a stairway to the fourth floor, a backdraft explosion blew out windows on the upper floor, Deputy Fire Chief Geoffrey Gardell stated. The backdraft explosive fire left 17 people homeless in Worcester Saturday, while firefighters escaped serious injury.

The fire was under control within the hour.

Authorities are investigating the cause of the fire.

Structural Fire; Multiple Fire Crews Respond; 2473 Gaskill Rd. in Campville Fire District 11.07.14

TIOGA COUNTY, N.Y.
Tioga County Fire Control dispatched Campville Fire Department to respond to 2473 Gaskill Rd. in the Campville New York Fire District, at 10:02 a.m. Friday morning for a fully involve garage fire.



Mutual-aid request was called for from the Owego Fire Department, and responded a fire engine to the fire scene along with it’s cascade air system. Also responding were the South Side Fire Company with two tankers, a tanker reponded from Newark Valley Fire department, and an engine company from West Corners Fire Department. Tioga County Fire Investigation responded to the fire scene also.

The fire destroyed the detached garage and all its contents which included trucks, lawnmowers and snow-blowers. Firefighting crews were able to prevent flames from reaching the nearby house.

"It did melt the siding of the home but it was a detached garage, so that was fully engulfed," said Assistant Fire Chief Diana Ford from Campville Fire Department. "We got a great knock down and saved the home, so that was our goal."

Firefighters had the structure in flames under control within an hour, and around 11:30 a.m., the fire was mostly out.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by the Tioga County fire investigators.

Structural Fire; Town of Main, New York 11.06.14

BROOM COUNTY, N.Y.
The East Maine Fire Department was dispatched to 298 Flint Rd. in the Town of Maine just after 10 a.m. Thursday morning .




Smoke and flames could be seen coming from the roof of the building when crews arrived. A second-alarm was called for the building fire in the town of Maine. Endwell Fire Department’s was requested for their FAST team to the fire scene.

The Broome County Sheriff's Office informed that the fire started on the upstairs floor of the split-level house.
    
There were no one was injured in the blaze and the fire was in a crawl space between two bathrooms and located in the attic of the two family home. 
   

East Maine, Endwell, Maine and Union Center Fire Departments responded and were on scene at the fireground for fire-fighting operations.
    
"We have fire damage in one area of the second floor in the attic, smoke damage on the second floor. There's water damage from both plumbing and fire fighting operations in the area of the bathrooms," says Brett Chellis, Broome County Fire Coordinator.
  
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by the Broome County fire investigators.

Binghamton House Fire 11.02.14

BROOM COUNTY, N.Y.
The Binghamton Fire Department responded to the fire call Sunday evening around 6:45 p.m.

The fire destroyed both the kitchen and attic of a home. There was heavy fire and flames in the second floor kitchen with the fire extending to the attic above kitchen.

Binghamton Fire Department firefighter had the fire extinguish within 45 minutes.

"They can probably replace and rebuild the kitchen there, and then reoccupy the building," said Binghamton Fire Department Assistant Fire Chief Steve Faughnan. "The fire was completely confined to that area of the building, both the attic and the kitchen. The rest of the second floor and the first floor just have water and smoke damage at this point."

All occupants were in the home at the time but were able to make it out without any injuries.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.

Chimney Fire 500 Shady Dr. Town of Union 11.02.14

BROOM COUNTY, N.Y.
A  possible chimney fire in the town of Union Sunday evening was called in for the Endwell Fire Department for it's fire crews to respond at  5:30 p.m.

Vestal, West Corners and Union Center fire departments were requested & toned out to repondas a second alarm was sounded for heavy smoke at the fireground.

Fire was  burning in the first floor inside the chimney, and began to extend into the second floor bedroom. Fire crews extinguished the fire in 20 minutes.

Home owners were home at the time and Fire Chief Winchell said they were active in suppressing the fire.

"The people had just bought the house within the past year or two and we really haven't gotten into the investigation to see if it was a faulty install or a maintenance problem," said Fire Chief of the Endwell Fire Department Jeff Winchell. "We're really not sure yet."

No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is unknown at this time, and is under investigation.

Structural Fire 245 Ithaca Road, Spencer, New York 10.29.2014

TIOGA COUNTY, N.Y.
A structure fire in Spencer was reported a little after 4:00 p.m. Monday evening on 242 Ithaca Road. Firefighting crews were able to save a family's dog after a fire broke out.




Firefighter Christine Lester also stated firefighters attacked the fire from the inside, using the hose and ventilation. Firefighters were able to contain the flames from spreading through the whole house.

The structural fire caused significant smoke and fire damage to the garage and parts of the home.

The couple that lives at the house and were not home when the fire broke out. There are no injuries reported.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Spencer Fire Department, West Danby Fire Department, Candor- Van Etten Fire Department and Tioga County Fire Investigation teams responded  and were on scene at the fireground.

Multiple Fire Department Respond To A House Fire 10.26.14

TIOGA COUNTY, N.Y.
A structure fire in Apalachin was reported just after 5:00 p.m. Sunday evening on 55 Glann Road. The fire was under control about two hours later.

The house was unoccupied, and was left with significant damage inside a home

Apalachin Fire Department Assistant Fire Chief Steve Luker said, "There's significant damage to the house, the homeowner will have to spend some time and a little rehab should be able to reoccupy the house in a little while." 

Assistant Fire Chief Luker also stated that arriving fire crews, went into immediate attack mode as soon as they arrived, "It's standard protocol for us to bring in multiple agencies in order for us to make sure we have enough man power and enough trucks here when we have an unknown condition," said Luker. "So what you saw was a lot of our agencies working together as our team work that we always practice to do."

There are no injuries reported.

Apalachin Fire Department, Campville Fire Department, West Corners Fire Department and Tioga County Fire Investigation teams responded  and were on scene at the fireground.

Tioga House Fire 09.28.14, Under Investigation . . .

(Nichols, NY) Multiple vehicles and a garage caught fire on 345 Tuttle Rd just after four o'clock Sunday afternoon.

According to officials, the fire started in the detached garage later spreading to the cars and home. Three cars are totaled after the blaze. 




The home owner was home at the time of the fire and called it in. 

It took firefighters about three hours to get the fire under control. Fire officials say they still don't know the cause of that fire.
     

The attack on the outside of the building took about a half an hour. Then a interior attack, trenching the roof of the home in order to cut the fire in half to salvage the left portion of the home from any more damage.

Six fire departments were called to the fire ground scene. Fire departments from Nichols, Tioga Center, Owego, Wyndham (PA) were on scene to fight this structural fire.

No one was injured.

The fire is still under investigation.

City of Tonawanda, New York House Fire, 53 Coronet Drive - 04.23.2014

  

A response was made by firefighters to fight  a fast moving house fire Wednesday morning. Fire destroyed a home at 53 Coronet Drive home in City of Tonawanda, New York.
   
Officials say an elderly couple, Al and Claire Festaiuti, who lived inside the 53 Coronet Drive home in City of Tonawanda, New York made it out okay.
    
"Either a police officer or a relative was able to escort them from the building just prior to us arriving," City of Tonawanda Fire Chief Charles Stuart said, "I believe the gentleman did have a little bit of smoke inhalation, but there were no other injuries to the occupants and no injuries the firefighters."  
     
It was reported the police were called by the elderly couple’s son who lives in Clarence for a domestic issue on his mother’s behalf.   

“Before they got here, before the police pulled up, the fire started. In speaking with the daughter, she doesn’t even think the parents knew there was a fire in the house,” said City of Tonawanda Fire Chief Charles Stuart.  
  
The elderly couple made it out of the home before police and firefighters arrived. It is suspected that the fire started in a bedroom. After the fire was out a dog was found dead in the bedroom. 
  
“It’s fairly gutted. Burned through from the front to the back. Some salvageable items in the basement but for the most part this fire took off really, really fast and despite our best efforts it pretty much consumed everything on the first floor,” said Chief Stuart.
  
Fire damage of the home estimated between $80,000 and $100,000. The cause of the fire remains unknown, and police are treating it like a crime scene.

Two Vacant Buffalo House Fires - 04.13.2014

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Flames ripped through two vacant homes in the City of Buffalo at 333 Mills Street at 10:55 PM, late Sunday night.

Firefighters found flames shooting from a home and a nearby rear cottage on Mills Street.



Crews fought the fire from the outside for safety.

"We tried to make an interior attack, and the fire was just to heavy," said Division Chief Michael Biasillo. "We had a difficult time with water pressure so we decided to go defensive."

No one was hurt.

There's no word yet on a cause.

House Fire - West Seneca New York 04.12.2014

As many as 10 fire companies were on hand to deal with the flames at this home on Burch Avenue in West Seneca, New York on Saturday. Smoke from the fire could be seen as far away as the 400 expressway.



WEST SENECA, NY - A home at 148 Burch Ave. in West Seneca was extensively damaged in a fire that was reported by a neighbor about noon on Saturday.

Volunteers from multiple fire companies responded to the scene. No one was injured in the blaze, and it was believed no one was home when the fire broke out. The building is considered a total loss.

The Erie County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the cause of the fire, which was believed to have started in the rear of the home.

Newark Valley Fire On 04.05.14, Investigators Find Cause . . .

A house in Tioga County, New York is ruled a total loss after a two-alarm fire ripped through the second floor of a home on April 5, 2014. The call came in around 11 a.m. Saturday morning for a structure fire at 1163 Tarbox Lane in Newark Valley.

   

Tioga County Investigators say the Saturday morning fire started in the chimney and quickly spread to the walls.

  

It was reported that the home’s sole occupant, an elderly woman, was not home when the fire broke out.

       

Firefighters were unable to safely enter the house in efforts to control the blaze. Firefighting crews kept to a defensive mode approach of fighting the fire with hose lines at two rear corners of the house.

  

Firefighting crews arrived on scene and the roof of the house had already collapsed, which forced the crews into a defensive attack.

   

Fire departments from Union Center, Berkshire, Maine, and West Corners were called in to assist the Newark Valley Fire Department get water to the fire ground, and assisted with fighting this structural fire.

Six-Alarm Fire: Historic Rexmere Hotel, Stamford, NY - 03.25.2014

Stamford, NY (WBNG Binghamton) A six-alarm fire destroys the historic seven-story Rexmere Hotel building with multiple fire departments across three counties responding.

Stamford, NY -- Fire ripped through a historic building on Tuesday. 

The fire engulfed the 100-year-old wooden building once known as 'The Queen of the Catskills' in less than half an hour.

Not much is left of the old Rexmere Hotel at 159 Main Street in Stamford after the fire. Authorities say more than 100 firefighters battled the flames.

Investigators say they don't believe the building was still in use. They say flames were spotted on the first floor and spread very quickly. The Fire Chief says the whole structure went up in flames in about 10 minutes. 

Authorities have not yet spoken about a possible cause.

At least 10 departments responded with more than 300 firefighters on scene.

The investigation into the cause of the fire is likely to take days according to the Stamford Fire Chief.

Firefighters Battle Huge Fire Ovid, New York - 03.18.2014

OVID, SENECA CO. , New York (CNY) -- Seneca County Sheriff's Deputies and fire investigators are back on the scene Wednesday morning looking for the cause a large fire in Ovid Tuesday evening.

Witnesses say the fire started in a restaurant on Main Street around 5:40 p.m., which spread to apartment buildings near the restaurant.

Authorities say the fire destroyed four or five buildings. They have been condemned and will have to be torn down.

New Dragon Chinese Restaurant is a two-story brick building wedged in a row of a half-dozen businesses on South Main Street. Community Thrift Shop is immediately beside the restaurant and Giuseppe's Pizza is on the corner. The Joint Assessment Group building was also affected. There are apartments above some of the businesses.

Attorney Steven Getman's office is across the street from the fire.

"I was working late, and all of a sudden I heard a loud noise and that was the fire companies rolling up," Getman said Tuesday evening. "From where I am right now I can see fire trucks everywhere - all the way up and down Main Street."

Ovid, N.Y. -- Fire destroyed four buildings in a Seneca County community Tuesday night.

Firefighters found heavy black smoke coming from the back of the buildings on Main Street in Ovid just before 6 p.m. 

Ovid's fire chief said as many as 25 fire departments helped battle flames. 

All of the buildings damaged in the fire will have to be demolished, according to Ovid's fire chief. 

Blanche Belliveau, who lives in a nearby apartment, said she was alerted to a problem after a noise that sounded like an explosion. 

"We heard a noise, and then a big pop, and then I ran out of the building," she said. Belliveau said she first spotted flames in a restaurant inside the building.

No injuries have been reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Buffalo 2-Alarm Fire Destroys One Home & Damages Other Homes

          
The Buffalo Fire Department responded to a 2-alarm fire on Buffalo's East Side at 69 Blake Street, around  9:13 a.m Sunday morning. By the time firefighters arrived the house was fully involved.



The blaze destroyed a large vacant house and damaged three neighboring houses.

Fire investigators are looking into what started this fire. The fire, reported at 3:34 a.m., was considered suspicious and is under investigation.

Two Buffalo, New York Fires 05.12.2012

Buffalo Firefighters responded early this morning at 0031 hrs for a report of a structure fire on Walden Ave. . Fire was showing from the rear of a two story vacant dwelling. There was reported fire on the first  floor with possible extension to the second floor and attic. It was by  further reported by firefighting crews the building structurally compromised and ordered defensive operations.




Buffalo Firefighters also responded to a fatal blaze at 2972 Bailey early this morning at 0055 hrs for a report of a structure fire on Bailey Ave.. The building is a mixed-use commercial and residential building.

The victim, John Ciszek, 59 years old, was unable to make it out lived in a rear apartment of the two-story building at 2972 Bailey,  and was pronounced dead on the scene. Mr John Ciszek's roommate Joseph Balsano said,"I heard the smoke alarm going off. That's what woke me up," then Balsano attempted to get access to the victim  but failed, escaped.

Buffalo Fire Department Division Chief Patrick Britzzalaro described "heavy fire conditions" in the first floor rear apartment where the two roommates lived.



Firefighting crews arrived with fire showing from a 1 1/2 story mixed use building and a report of a victim inside. There was reported heavy fire on the first floor of the occupied building with an exposure problem  and a requested for additional firefighting crews to the fire scene. The fire was under control in 36 minutes.

Four Killed In Fast-Moving Rochester Multi-Family House Fire 2.18.12

Firefighters originally were called for a rubbish fire on the sidewalk.

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (AP) — Investigators are trying to determine what caused a fast-moving fire that swept through a multifamily home early Saturday, killing four people, all of whom appeared to be children or teenagers, fire officials said.

Firefighters were on the scene quickly and tried to reach people sleeping inside, but the blaze spread through the two-story wood-framed building with such speed they were unable to get to people trapped on the upper floor.

"The firefighters were actually enveloped in flames for a brief time," Rochester fire Chief John Caufield told the Democrat and Chronicle newspaper. "We withdrew them. There was just no possible way for them to make a search or any further entry in there without really sacrificing their own lives."

Authorities have not yet released the identities and ages of the victims.

Caufield said five people survived the blaze. A woman and her toddler were rescued by firefighters on the first floor and three others in the house escaped by jumping from a second-floor window. They were taken to a hospital, he said.

The cause of the fire was under investigation, but the circumstances appeared unusual.

Firefighters were called to the neighborhood at 1 a.m. to extinguish a rubbish fire on the sidewalk. After dousing those flames, in what looked like a pile of burning clothes, firefighters did a routine canvass of the wood-frame apartment building on the property, Caufield said, and discovered another fire "that appeared to have occurred while we were here."

The fire crew radioed for help and rushed inside the dwelling, but things sped out of control.

"The whole first floor was heavily involved with fire," Caufield said. "The initial crew that was here made entry into the building and rescued a woman and an infant from the first-floor apartment. And in the short time it took to make that rescue, the fire flashed over and took over the whole first floor and extended quickly to the second floor."

Fire officials could see people moving on the second floor of the building, but within minutes flames were shooting from the windows.

Rochester Mayor Thomas Richards praised the bravery of the firefighters.

"The men and women of the Rochester Fire Department saved the life of a mother and her young toddler who were downstairs, then tried repeatedly to save the other four children upstairs," Richards said in a statement sent to the Democrat and Chronicle.

"They risked their lives in the attempt and had to be ordered back when the fire flashed and engulfed the house," Richards said.

Grape Street Fire: The Rochester fire chief on Feb. 18 describes the events that led to the deaths of four children.

The Rochester Fire Department on Monday identified the four children killed in a fire on Grape Street on Saturday.

The siblings were identified as Gage Reavey, 14, Greg Kugler, 13, Kandee Kugler, 12, and Kaiden Kugler, 6.

The children's mother, Bobbie Kugler, 30, and her 2-year-old son, Tyron Jackson, were rescued from the first-floor of the residence at 82 Grape St., firefighters said.

Family friend James Austin, 25, and two teens — Waltquaries Evans, 15, and Giovanni Delorm, 13 — jumped from second-floor windows to escape the blaze. Austin, a friend of Bobbie Kugler's, also lived at 82 Grape. The two teens were sleeping over when the fire broke out, firefighters said.

All five were taken to Strong Memorial Hospital on Saturday. Delorm was in guarded condition on Monday; Austin, Evans and Tyron were in satisfactory condition, according to a hospital spokeswoman. Bobbie Kugler's status was not available.
