Firefighter Edward Singleton contracted COVID-19 during the course of his official duties at the firehouse.

While on official duty, Firefighter Mario Araujo, 49, contracted COVID-19 from exposure from a patient with a known case of COVID-19.

USFA LODD: Illinois Firefighter On-Duty Death Notification 05.28.2018

While searching for a 28-year-old man who fell off of a boat into the South Branch of the Chicago River, Firefighter/EMT Juan J. Bucio, 46, became separated from his dive partner and went missing. According to initial reports, Firefighter Bucio's dive partner immediately declared a Mayday and, along with other divers, began to search the river for Firefighter Bucio. After approximately 20 minutes, Firefighter Bucio was found and rescued from the river. Firefighter Bucio was then transported to the hospital where, despite all efforts to revive him by paramedics and hospital personnel, he was declared deceased.

USFA LODD: Illinois Firefighter/Paramedic On-Duty Death Notification 12.14.2015

Firefighter/Paramedic Daniel V. Capuano, 42, on December 14, 2015 at 0243hrs, died from injuries sustained in a fall down an elevator shaft while operating with fire crews in heavy smoke conditions inside of a burning warehouse building. Firefighter/Paramedic Capuano was quickly removed from the building and into a waiting ambulance then taken to Christ Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. The cause of the fatal fire incident remains under investigation by local and state authorities.

USFA: Illinois and Indiana Firfighters On-Duty Death

The U.S. Fire Administration (USFA) has received notice of the following firefighter fatality:

Firefighter Walter Patmon, Jr., 61, of the Chicago Fire Department, on November 11, 2012, at  2200hrs, upon returning to quarters after helping to put out a small kitchen fire in the South Side Beverly neighborhood of Chicago, fell ill while cleaning equipment. Firefighter Patmon was treated by fellow first responders and transported to the hospital where he passed away from an apparent heart attack.

Our condolences to the Patmon Family & Friends, the Chicago Fire Department and to all affected by Firefighter Walter Patmon's passing.

Firefighter Mark Haudenschild II, 25, of the Washington Township Fire Department, on November 11, 2012, at  2024hrs, died from injuries sustained when the fire apparatus he was operating crashed as he was responding to a reported grass fire. Haudenschild was reportedly not wearing seat restraints and passed away at the scene of blunt force trauma due to the motor vehicle crash.

Chicago firefighter killed in extra-alarm blaze on South Side - Chicago News and Weather | FOX Chicago News


Fire Dept. Capt. Herbie Johnson, 54, perished from injuries suffered Friday evening while battling a house fire at 2315 W. 50th Place, becoming the first Chicago firefighter to die in the line of duty since 2010.


Captain Johnson died from inhalation injuries sustained while operating at a structure fire. Media reports said that “Johnson died after saving several families--including many with small children--from a burning South Side home.” Investigation of the fatal fire incident continues.

Chicago Fire Department - Everyone Goes Home

NFFF News Release: In an effort to make personal safety a top priority, the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF) and the Chicago Fire Department (CFD) today released a new video, Chicago Fire Department – Everyone Goes Home®. Members of the CFD and families of fallen firefighters share their stories in this compelling and moving testimonial of the importance of adhering to safety standards and accepting personal responsibility for following procedures.

Chicago Fire Commissioner Robert Hoff was impressed by a video that the NFFF and the Fire Department of New York produced several years earlier to educate members about the importance of training and safety standards. The FDNY leadership had noticed behavioral improvement among its members following the release of their video. Hoff felt that the members of the CFD could benefit from hearing first-hand accounts of the lessons learned by their colleagues and invited the NFFF to collaborate on a video for Chicago.

“The culture of firefighting requires us to do everything we can to make sound decisions so we can be in a position to help the people we serve when they most need it,” said Ronald J. Siarnicki, executive director of the NFFF. “With this video the firefighters and leadership of the Chicago Fire Department are clearly showing the rest of the fire service you can still be a firefighter and at the same time do your best to make sure Everyone Goes Home®.”
