"The cold temperatures didn't affect us as much as a shortage of manpower affected us.  We had to wait for crews to arrive before we could actually start getting there safely," says  Captain of Endicott FD Donald Collins.

Firefighting crews were quick to put the fire out, however the house sustained extensive smoke damage, Collins said.

“We knocked the fire down,” Capt. Collins said. “There was concern there were still people inside, so we conducted search and rescue and found everyone had evacuated.”

Crews from Union Center, West Corners, West Endicott, Endwell and Vestal assisted, Collins said. The fire was out by 8 p.m.

There were no injuries to firefighters. The displaced residents, Four people were home at the time of the fire, including three children, are being assisted by the Red Cross.

2-Alarm Family Dollar Store Fire - Binghamton New York 01.03.2015

BROOME COUNTY, N.Y.
Firefighters from Binghamton, Vestal and Five Mile Point fire departments responded early Saturday morning at 12:15 A.M. to the Family Dollar store located at 1173 Vestal Ave. in the City of Binghamton’s South Side.

Heavy smoke coming from the building's rear for more than two hours, with small flames flickering from areas of the roof cut away by firefighters with chainsaws.

The fire was contained to the rear of the building, although the windows of the Family Dollar were broken out. The area inside of the front of the store appeared to be charred from the fire.

At 2:25 A.M. it was reported by fire crews on the scene to the county dispatchers that the fire was contained and they were concentrating on stubborn areas of the roof that continued to smolder.

"The fire was real stubborn but we were able to contain it," said Binghamton Fire Marshal Dan Eggleston. "The guys did a great job knocking it down."

"They knocked down the initial fire pretty quick," said Binghamton Fire Marshal Daniel Eggleston. "But there were some hot spots under the roof. We were here for several hours."

"We're going in and finding where we believe the fire started," Eggleston said. "We're trying to find out potential causes in that area, and ruling out certain things, leaving us whatever is left."

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
