USFA LODD: Louisiana Firefighter On-Duty Death Notification 07.06.2017

On July 6, 2017 Firefighter Ronda Sylvest Varnado, 54, was driving a fully loaded water truck responding to the scene of a residential fire in the Mt. Hermon area. Near the intersection of Mt. Pisgah Road and Burch Road, the truck left the roadway and tipped over, sliding several yards before striking an embankment.  At that point, the water tank came loose and crashed into the truck cab, causing the death of Firefighter Varnado. Investigation of the crash continues by the Washington Parish Sheriff’s Office.

Our condolences to the Varnado Family & Friends, Washington Parish Fire Protection District #2, and to all affected by Firefighter Ronda Sylvest Varnado’s passing.

To date, 52 firefighter fatalities have been reported to USFA in 2017. Year-to-date monthly and annual USFA firefighter fatality reports are posted online at U.S. Fire Administration (USFA) Fatality Notices page.
