USFA: Loganville Volunteer Fire Company Fire Chief Line Of Duty Death 04.27.2013

While directing traffic near the scene of a motor vehicle accident (MVA) on southbound Interstate 83, on Apr 27, 2013 at 00:36hrs., Fire Chief Rodney Paul Miller was struck and killed by a motorist attempting to drive around the traffic control point and Chief Miller’s fire department vehicle which was well marked with emergency lights operating at the time. The driver of the vehicle did not stop his vehicle after striking Fire Chief Rodney Paul Miller. After being caught further down the Interstate in the backed traffic from the original MVA, the driver was arrested and subsequently charged with homicide by vehicle while driving under the influence along with several other violations.

"He was just a perfect example of what a community person can be," said Stan Brown, a former Loganville fire chief and friend.

Our condolences to the Miller Family & Friends, the Loganville Volunteer Fire Company and to all affected by Fire Chief Rodney Paul Miller's passing.

To date, 25 firefighter fatalities has been reported to USFA in 2013. Year-to-date monthly and annual USFA firefighter fatality reports are posted online at U.S. Fire Administration (USFA) Fatality Notices page.
