NEWARK, N.J. — The Newark Fire Department responded to a fire that started just before 10 p.m. at 295 Lafayette St. and quickly spread to three other houses before firefighters extinguished the blaze two hours later on Saturday evening.
Two homes were destroyed and two others were severely damaged when the multi-alarm blaze roared through the Ironbound neighborhood Saturday night.
No injuries have been reported. There is no word yet on what sparked the blaze. Crews worked for most of the night to access the damage and check for hotspots.
A total of 33 people were forced out of their homes. Most will be staying with family and friends. “We had about 33 people in the reception center, but many were able to stay with friends or family members,” Red Cross spokeswoman Diane Kincannon said.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
