Structural Fire 245 Ithaca Road, Spencer, New York 10.29.2014

TIOGA COUNTY, N.Y.
A structure fire in Spencer was reported a little after 4:00 p.m. Monday evening on 242 Ithaca Road. Firefighting crews were able to save a family's dog after a fire broke out.




Firefighter Christine Lester also stated firefighters attacked the fire from the inside, using the hose and ventilation. Firefighters were able to contain the flames from spreading through the whole house.

The structural fire caused significant smoke and fire damage to the garage and parts of the home.

The couple that lives at the house and were not home when the fire broke out. There are no injuries reported.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Spencer Fire Department, West Danby Fire Department, Candor- Van Etten Fire Department and Tioga County Fire Investigation teams responded  and were on scene at the fireground.

Multiple Fire Department Respond To A House Fire 10.26.14

TIOGA COUNTY, N.Y.
A structure fire in Apalachin was reported just after 5:00 p.m. Sunday evening on 55 Glann Road. The fire was under control about two hours later.

The house was unoccupied, and was left with significant damage inside a home

Apalachin Fire Department Assistant Fire Chief Steve Luker said, "There's significant damage to the house, the homeowner will have to spend some time and a little rehab should be able to reoccupy the house in a little while." 

Assistant Fire Chief Luker also stated that arriving fire crews, went into immediate attack mode as soon as they arrived, "It's standard protocol for us to bring in multiple agencies in order for us to make sure we have enough man power and enough trucks here when we have an unknown condition," said Luker. "So what you saw was a lot of our agencies working together as our team work that we always practice to do."

There are no injuries reported.

Apalachin Fire Department, Campville Fire Department, West Corners Fire Department and Tioga County Fire Investigation teams responded  and were on scene at the fireground.

USFA: Owego New York Firefighter On-Duty Death

"It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that the Owego Fire Department announces the Line of Duty Death of Captain Matthew Porcari while battling a house fire last night. Injured in the blaze was Firefighter Daniel Gavin, who was transported to a local hospital and then transferred to the burn unit at Upstate Medical in Syracuse NY. All of our thoughts and prayers are with the Porcari and Gavin families in this tragic time."

Captain Matthew J. Porcari and another firefighter after respomding with the Owego Fire Department Company #3 to a mutual aid call were performing interior attack on a structure, and fell through the floor of the structure.

Both firefighters were transported to separate facilities. Captain Porcari, 34, succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival to the hospital.  The other firefighter received burns. 

Our condolences to the Porcari Family & Friends, the Owego Fire Department, and to all affected by Captain Matthew J. Porcari's passing.

One Firefighter Death & One Firefighter Injured at Newark Valley NY Structural Fire 01.22.2013

A structure in Tioga County was gutted by a fast-moving fire.

The blaze on Chamberlain Road in the town of Newark Valley was reported around 10:45 Monday night.

About a half-dozen Tioga County fire departments battled the fire for several hours. Fire crews remained on the scene this morning.




At 12:10 a.m., Newark Valley called for all available crews from Campville. Newark Valley, Berkshire, Maine and Owego fire departments were also on the scene. Union Center was called later in the morning.

A request for a medical helicopter at approximately 11:40 p.m. was denied because of the weather. 

An Owego firefighter is dead and another was injured while battling a fire in Newark Valley. 

Owego Deputy Fire Chief Bob Williams said Owego firefighters Matthew Porcari and Daniel Gavin were in the building when the floor collapsed. Porcari died in the fire. Gavin was taken to Wilson Hospital with burns before being transferred to Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse.





State fire investigators were at the Owego Fire Department Tuesday morning.

1 dead, 2 hurt in Waverly NY Apartment House Fire

Waverly firefighters, the Sayre Fire Department and Greater Valley Emergency Medical Services from Sayre, Pennsylvania, responded to an early morning fire 2:30 Friday morning at 7 Ithaca Street, Waverly NY in Tioga County. Waverly-Barton Fire Officials said when they arrived at the scene; smoke and fire were spewing out of the home. "On arrival, we found the house fully involved in fire," said Jeff Wheeler, first assistant fire chief of the Waverly Barton Fire Department.

There were two other people in the upstairs apartment that had to jump to safety before we were on the scene" said Assistant Fire Chief Jeff Waverly. Firefighters pulled one person out of the downstairs apartment. A Waverly man that was taken to Robert Packer Hospita is dead after the fire that took place in Tioga County, New York. The two other persons taken to the hospital had non-life threatening injuries.

After about an hour of firefighting the fire was knocked down and brought under control, with firefighting crews staying on the fireground scene till 10 a.m. to ensure no rekindle of fire would happen.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. Tioga County Fire Investigators and Waverly Village Police are conducting the investigation.

The Great Flood of 2011

Well, with heavy rain coming down all day, we lost power last Wednesday (9/7/11) at 11:15 pm with the Susquehanna River here in the Southern Tier of New York State on the rise. On Thursday morning (9/8/11) at about 03:45 am we got the word we had to evacuate our homes to higher ground. It was being reported/being told that the river water was at the top of the dike system that surrounds & protects the little Village from the flood waters on the brink of following over. The flood level along the Susquehanna River was pushing near 40 feet at this point, which was 3-4 feet higher than the 2006 Flood.

With family and friends safe on high ground at the local Village elementary school made into a community shelter, we waited it out for about 30 hours for the water levels to lower. On Friday (9/9/11) 11:00 am we were clear to head back to our homes in the Village. At my home we found that we only had 2 and a half feet of water in the basement where once the sump pump was started, on generator power, keep the water level where it was at till levels began to recede. We were very fortunate & lucky that’s all we had to deal with and I was proud that the dike system had held to protected our little Village from a greater disaster that was affecting the rest of our county and neighboring counties. Our thoughts and prayers are with those dealing with alot more.

After being on generator power for 4+ days waiting & watching the ground water as well as river water receding back, we started the process to dry thing and help our neighbors as best we can. On Monday evening (9/12/11) about 7:45 pm, being positive after making a bet with my neighbor that electrical power would be on by Wednesday @ 6:30 pm for four quarters, I met my neighbor at my back porch door who handed me four quarters. I just looked at those four quarters and said, “Wow, the power is back on!”

Today Tuesday (9/13/11) life got back to a little normal in the little Village I live in and we are luckier than most in the area here due to the dike that held its ground and held the flood waters at bay.
