On April 27, 2020, Firefighter Eric Gore, 49, responded to an emergency at a residence where he came in contact with a person with a known case of COVID-19.  He subsequently passed away on Tuesday, June 2, 2020 from the virus.

On March 5, 2019, Firefighter Michael Bernstein, 46, suffered a medical emergency while on-duty at Engine 78 at Philadelphia International Airport. Firefighter Michael Bernstein was transported to Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital where he passed away. The nature and cause of fatal injury are still to be determined.

On January 6, 2018 Lieutenant Matthew LeTourneau, 42, of Philadelphia Fire Department Engine 45 succumbed to injuries suffered from a structural collapse while fighting a rowhouse fire.

Firefighter Lieutenant Kenneth Greene, Sr., 60, became ill while on-duty and was transported to the hospital from the fire station on September 3, 2017. Lieutenant Green passed away on September 14th, 2017, from a nature and cause of fatal injury still to be reported.

Firefighter Gabriel Garnet Lee, 42, on July 23, 2016 at 1911hrs, was found unresponsive in the gym of the firehouse several hours after responding to a fire call. Lee was treated by fellow responders then taken to Temple University Hospital where he was pronounced dead. The nature of fatal injury is still to be determined.

USFA LODD: Mississippi Fire Captain On-Duty Death Notification 05.06.2015

On May 6, 2015, approximately one hour after returning to quarters from a carbon monoxide response call, Fire Captain Dwight Greer, 44, suffered a cardiac related medical emergency at the station while participating in fire department mandated physical training. Captain Greer was treated by fellow responders and transported to the hospital where he succumbed to his injury.

Fire Captain Dwight Greer is survived by six siblings, Barbara Love and Latonya Greer, both of Tampa, Fla., Jacqueline Greer of Charlotte, N.C., Willis Greer,Jr. and Kellis Greer, both of Philadelphia, and Jennifer Rhodes of Atlanta, Ga.;

Three-Alarm Fire In Warehouse In North Philadelphia 04.27.2013

Firefighting crews were called out, before 6 a.m. Saturday April 27, 2013, to a  3-alarm warehouse fire in North Philadelphia at the 1800 block of West Sedgley Avenue just before 6:00 a.m.

The massive blaze was reported under control just after 10: a.m. Saturday.

It was reported several small explosions from propane tanks and called in hazardous materials crews to investigate.

No injuries have been reported.

Philadelphia Fire commissioner Lloyd Ayers says it’s fortunate no one was hurt. “We had numerous explosions. You can see where a wall has been blown out by those explosions.” Fire commissioner  Ayers says propane tanks exploded but again no fire fighters or residents were injured.

Officials say propane tanks caused several small explosions and hazmat crews have been called in to investigate. No immediate information as to a cause or what might have started the blaze from authorities.

Philadelphia Fire Department Firefighter Line Of Duty Death 04.06.2013

Captain Michael R. Goodwin, Sr. on April 4, 2012 passed away while fighting a three alarm blaze after a third-floor roof collapsed beneath him. Capt Goodwin was on the roof of the building when it collapsed, trapping him inside. 




Captain Goodwin is to be promoted posthumously to the position of Battalion Chief. Investigation into the fatal fire continues by authorities. 

Fire Commissioner Lloyd Ayers stated the 53 year old Capt. Michael Goodwin, was his friend and "a ladder man. A firefighter's firefighter. He's the kind of guy who looked out for his folks — a big guy." 

"We have a department that is wounded," Commissioner Ayers said. "We have scars that are fresh, and indeed they have now been reopened."




Captain Goodwin had been with the department for 29 years.

Michael R. Goodwin, Sr. is survived by a wife and two grown children.

Service Restored On Market-Frankford Line After 4-Alarm Fire - Philadelphia News, Weather and Sports from WTXF FOX 29

PHILADELPHIA (boston.com) —A four-alarm fire in a vacant north Philadelphia warehouse left a firefighter injured after a fall and disrupted public transit, authorities said.

The blaze in the four-story building in the Fishtown section of the city was reported at about 2:30 a.m. The flames burned out of control for almost two hours before fire officials pronounced the blaze under control, but crews were still pouring water on the smoking ruins well after daybreak.

The blaze happened near the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority's Market-Frankford Elevated Line, forcing service to be halted and replaced with shuttle buses between two stops. Commuters were warned to expect delays and crowded conditions through the morning. SEPTA said late Tuesday afternoon that it had resumed full service on the line.

The Philadelphia Inquirer said one firefighter was taken to Hahnemann University Hospital, where he was reported in stable condition.

Fire Commissioner Lloyd Ayers said no evacuations were ordered but some nearby residents left their homes on their own. The cause of the fire was under investigation.



On-Scene of a 4th Alarm Warehouse Fire in the City of Philadelphia, Tactical Box 0243 was dispatched around 0230 hours for a 4 story warehouse. Engine 29 only a few blocks away declared the working fire and struck a 2nd alarm on arrival, shortly after that the 3rd alarm was struck and all units went in service with heaviest water lines. As the fire raged command struck the 4th alarm and special called an extra ladder and water tower, the fire was declared under control around 0430 hrs but crews remained on location for an extended period of time. One firefighter suffered a minor injury after a fall and the building was a total loss, fire is under investigation.



Engine-29 arrived on scene with heavy fire showing from a three story vacant factory, placed all hands in service. B/C-4 arrived and requested the second struck. All companies in service with heaviest water lines. Command reported an exposure problem and requested the third alarm. Deputy 1 requested the 4th alarm struck. S/C 2 additonal ladders and Squrt 43 above the 4th Alarm. 1 Firefighter was transported the the hospital in serious condition.
