Massachusetts Firefighter On-Duty Death Notification 11.13.2019

In the early morning hours of Wednesday, November 13, 2019, Lieutenant Jason Menard, 39, and his crew responded to a multi-residential structure fire, with heavy smoke coming from the building. The fire grew to four alarms and, at one point, firefighters issued a mayday call from the third floor.  Lieutenant Menard and other firefighters became trapped by heavy fire conditions.  He helped two firefighters escape the blaze, but the fire quickly worsened and Lieutenant Menard was unable to flee and succumbed to his injuries. Three other firefighters were taken to the hospital.  Two of the firefighters have been released and the third is in serious condition.

USFA LODD: Massachusetts Firefighter On-Duty Death Notification 02.27.2019

On February 26, 2019, Firefighter Thomas Nye, 72, helped extinguish a residential chimney fire and then returned home. , Firefighter Nye collapsed early the next morning on February 27, 2019 after suffering an apparent cardiac incident, Firefighter Thomas Nye was transported to Tobey Hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

USFA LODD: Massachusetts Firefighter On-Duty Death Notification 12.09.2018

On December 9, 2018, Firefighter Christopher Roy, 36, responded with the Worcester Fire Department to a basement fire of a 3-story, 6-unit apartment building. Conditions deteriorated rapidly and, ultimately, the fire went to five alarms. Heavy fire forced several firefighters to the second floor to evacuate. With the assistance of other crews and the Rapid Intervention Team, five firefighters escaped using ladders. Two additional firefighters, including Firefighter Roy, became trapped and had to be rescued by fire crews. Both were transported to a local hospital where Firefighter Roy passed away from the injuries sustained. The second firefighter was evaluated and released.

On May 13, 2018, Firefighter Thomas Albert Cannon, 63, went into cardiac arrest at the beginning of his shift while performing truck and equipment checks in the firehouse. Firefighter Cannon was treated by fellow responders then rushed to the hospital where he passed away the following day.

USFA LODD: Massachusetts Firefighter On-Duty Death Notification 12.05.2017

On December 12, 2017 Fire Chief Stephen Frye, 59, collapsed while operating on an initial attack line at the scene of a late night two-alarm chimney fire that destroyed a residential structure. Fire Chief Frye was treated immediately on scene by fellow responders and transported to the hospital by a Hilltown ambulance crew where he was pronounced deceased a short time later. The nature and cause of fatal injury are still to be determined.

USFA LODD: Massachusetts Firefighter On-Duty Death Notification 03.30.2017

Firefighter Anthony Spano, 47, worked his shift which included one or more emergency response calls, including a “lift assist” call where he complained of back pain. Fewer than 24 hours later and just after coming off of his duty shift, Firefighter Spano on March 30, 2017 passed away from a nature and cause of fatal injury still to be reported when he fell ill while exercising at a gym.

On March 17, 2017 at 1015hrs, Firefighter Joseph Toscano, 54, collapsed while battling to a two-alarm house fire. Firefighter Toscano was taken to Mt. Auburn Hospital where he passed away from a nature and fatal cause of injury still to be reported.

USFA: Massachusetts Firefighter: On-Duty Death 07.22.2013

Firefighter David Brier, 50, on July 12, 2013, while working a 24-hour shift which started at 8 a.m. told his shift commander that he did not feel well and rested for awhile. Although his shift commander told him that he should go home, Firefighter Brier decided to finish out his shift. Upon completion of the shift, David Brier return home where he soon suffered a heart attack. He was rushed to Tufts New England Medical Center Boston and was on life support until July 22, 2013, when he passed away. Firefighter Brier never regained consciousness.
