USFA LODD: Maryland Firefighter On-Duty Death Notification 01.05.2020

On Saturday, December 28, 2019, Assistant Engineer Otis L. Isaacs, Jr., 73, was fixing a break on a fire engine and was on stand-by for two responses.  While on stand-by, he assisted with a function the fire department was having that evening by setting up tables and chairs.  He returned to the station the next morning, Sunday, December 29, 2019, to work on another fire department vehicle.  When he returned home late that morning, at approximately 1130hrs., he suffered a cardiac arrest and passed away.

USFA LODD: Maryland Firefighter On-Duty Death Notification 06.25.2019

On June 25, 2019 Firefighter Michael “Mike” Powers, 70, responded to the scene of a fatal vehicle accident.  While at the scene, he collapsed and suffered a medical emergency.  He was immediately transported to the Frederick Memorial Hospital where he passed away a short time later.  Investigation into the incident continues.

USFA LODD: Maryland Firefighter On-Duty Death Notification 09.01.2018

On September 1, 2018 Assistant Fire Chief Daniel "Danny" Lister, 34, was operating at the scene of a motor vehicle accident with multiple medical patients on Maryland Route 404 at Old Queen Anne Road and suffered a medical emergency. Resuscitation efforts on scene were unsuccessful and Assistant Fire Chief Lister passed away at the University of Maryland Shore Regional Health at Easton.

USFA LODD: Maryland Firefighter On-Duty Death Notification 07.23.2018

On July 23, 2018 at approximately 0200hrs, Firefighter Nathan Flynn responded with Howard County Fire and Rescue crews to a residential fire that began after a reported possible lightning strike. When crews arrived, heavy smoke was visible and firefighters began an interior attack on the home. While inside, Firefighter Flynn fell through the floor and a Mayday was called. Firefighter Nathan Flynn  was quickly removed by the Rapid Intervention Team and taken to Howard County General Hospital where he passed away as a result of his injuries.

USFA LODD: Maryland Firefighter On-Duty Death Notification 02.25.2018

On February 25, 2018 after returning home from an early morning response for a motor vehicle crash, Assistant Fire Chief Christopher Pryor, 46, complained to his wife that he was not feeling well. According to reports from FirefighterCloseCalls.com, Assistant Fire Chief Pryor's wife then took him to the emergency room where, upon arrival, he collapsed. Despite all efforts to revive him, Assistant Fire Chief Christopher Pryor passed away from a nature and cause of fatal injury still to be reported.

USFA LODD: Maryland Firefighter On-Duty Death Notification 04.07.2017

While on duty April 7, 2017 at Burtonsville Fire Station 15, Firefighter Charles "Rick" Gentilcore, 52, succumbed to a nature and cause of fatal injury still to be reported. Fellow emergency responders immediately initiated all possible means of emergency care, however, resuscitation efforts were not successful.

USFA LODD: Maryland Firefighter On-Duty Death Notification 04.15.2016

On April 15, 2016 at 1930hrs, Prince George's County Fire/EMS Department (PGFD) responded to a home for a welfare check call regarding a man with medical conditions that had not responded to relatives attempting to contact him. After arriving on scene, checking for any open doors or windows, and after making themselves known several times, firefighters forced entrance to the residence. As they entered the home, the resident fired several gun shots striking PGFD Firefighter/Paramedic John E. Ulmschneider, Morningside Volunteer Firefighter Kevin Swain, and the relative who had originally called for help. After being transported to the hospital, Firefighter/Paramedic Paramedic John E. Ulmschneider, 37, succumbed to his injuries. Firefighter Swain remains hospitalized in serious but stable condition. Police said the resident of the home believed his house was being broken into and fired in self-defense. No charges have been filed. Investigation into the fatal incident continues by authorities.

Maryland Firefighter/EMT LODD: On-Duty Death 01.15.2014

Firefighter/EMT James “Doc” Delbert Brooks, 62, on January 7, 2014, was winterizing boats and a station at the Fort Washington Marina in preparation for record low temperatures forecasted for the following day. Firefighter Brooks began to experience difficulty breathing and called 911. Firefighters and paramedics arrived to find James Brooks in cardiac arrest and immediately began pre-hospital care. James Brooks was transported to a nearby medical facility and subsequently relocated to Medstar at Washington Hospital Center in "critical" condition where he succumbed to his injury on January 15th, 2014.

USFA: Maryland Firefighter LODD: On-Duty Death 11.07.2013

On October 25, 2013 at 1600hrs while working a traffic control point protecting the scene of a motor vehicle accident, Fire Police Captain David Roland Barr Jr. , 64, was struck by a car and seriously injured. Fire Police Captain Barr was treated at the scene by fellow responders and transported to the hospital where he succumbed to his injuries almost two weeks later on November 7, 2013.

Eighty-one firefighters will be honored during the 32nd National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service on Sunday, October 6, at 10 a.m. (EDT) at the National Fire Academy in Emmitsburg, Maryland. The Fallen Eighty-one Firefighters were also remembered during a special Candlelight Service held on Saturday, October 5 at 6:30 p.m..

USFA: Maryland On-Duty Death 05.02.2013

Firefighter Gene Kirchner of Towson, Maryland, 24, passed away from injuries sustained at the scene of a working residential fire on April 24, 2013 at 0100hrs. Firefighter Kirchner was one of the first to respond to the residential fire on Hanover Road, and was found unconscious on the second floor  and rescued by fellow firefighters on the second floor of the structure after he had reportedly issued a Mayday call. A resident of the home, who did not survive the fire, had also been found and removed from the burning structure by firefighters.  Investigation into the fatal fire continues by authorities.        

Statement released by the Reisterstown Volunteer Fire Company:      
   
"It is with deep sorrow and regret that the Reisterstown Volunteer Fire Company announces the line of duty passing of Firefighter Gene Kirchner.  Gene succumbed to his injures after an 8 day fight.  He sustained critical injuries while he was performing a search on a dwelling fire April 24, 2013.   Gene is a 9 year member of our company and was a junior fire fighter for 2 years. A full fire department funeral will be scheduled."
