Binghamton Firefighters Responded To A Suspicious House Fire on Henry Street

The City of Binghamton Fire Departme's firefighter responded to a blaze in the three-story wood-frame structure at 122 Henry Street, , the call came in at 7:14 a.m. for a fire. Binghamton Police also responded to the fireground scene.

City firefighters had been called to this property at least twice in recent weeks to extinguish small fires that apparently had been set by people trying to keep warm. Although the apartment house was vacant, officials said people often stayed in the building. 

Binghamton Fire Chief Al Gardiner said no injuries were reported in the fire and the two structures on either side of the burning building were saved from the flames.

Firefighters were unable to conduct a complete building search but they said it appeared anyone who had been inside the structure when the fire erupted managed to get out.

One Binghamton firefighter sustained a minor injury when he slipped on ice at the scene. He was taken to a hospital for treatment. No other injuries were reported.

The fire was declared under control around 9 a.m. Firefighters remained on the scene to continue pouring water on hot spots.

Structure Fire South Side of Binghamton, New York 01.20.2016

(Binghamton, N.Y.) A house fire was reported at 7:31 p.m Wednesday night in Binghamton burned for hours. Police and fire crews were on scene according to Fire Chief Daniel Thomas, who stated it as a "very, very stubborn fire."

  

Firefighter crews responded to 106 Park Ave. to find a house that was fully engulfed in flames. "Upon arrival they found heavy fire showing here from the second floor," Binghamton Fire Chief Thomas said.

 

The home on fire was vacant with the Binghamton Fire Department firefighters working the fire as a defensive fire, Keeping the fire from spreading to surrounding structures.

"The cold conditions were one of the things we have had to be mindful of-- to keep the water moving through the hose lines. In fact, we've had several freeze-ups," Binghamton Fire Chief Daniel Thomas said, "That amount of fire, icy conditions-- we've had a couple firefighters slip."

"Anytime you're trying to fight a fire from the outside, until you can get that fire knocked down and get in to start to mop it up, it makes it difficult," Fire Chief Thomas said.

The blaze was contained by 9:00 p.m. to the house, with firefighters putting out hot spots, particularly around the roof line.

There were no reported injuries from the fire scene. The cause of this fire is still under investigation.

2-Alarm Family Dollar Store Fire - Binghamton New York 01.03.2015

BROOME COUNTY, N.Y.

Firefighters from Binghamton, Vestal and Five Mile Point fire departments responded early Saturday morning at 12:15 A.M. to the Family Dollar store located at 1173 Vestal Ave. in the City of Binghamton’s South Side.

Heavy smoke coming from the building's rear for more than two hours, with small flames flickering from areas of the roof cut away by firefighters with chainsaws.

The fire was contained to the rear of the building, although the windows of the Family Dollar were broken out. The area inside of the front of the store appeared to be charred from the fire.

At 2:25 A.M. it was reported by fire crews on the scene to the county dispatchers that the fire was contained and they were concentrating on stubborn areas of the roof that continued to smolder.

"The fire was real stubborn but we were able to contain it," said Binghamton Fire Marshal Dan Eggleston. "The guys did a great job knocking it down."

"They knocked down the initial fire pretty quick," said Binghamton Fire Marshal Daniel Eggleston. "But there were some hot spots under the roof. We were here for several hours."

"We're going in and finding where we believe the fire started," Eggleston said. "We're trying to find out potential causes in that area, and ruling out certain things, leaving us whatever is left."

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Two Alarm Fire in Binghamton - Old 'Pa's Woodshed' Burns

A 2-alarm fire broke out on 115 Montgomery Street in Binghamton, New York. The fire, as firefighters battle massive flames, has closed off several blocks in the area, that can be seen across Interstate Route 81.



Upon arrival firefighters found three buildings in flames and immediately called for additional units. Crews from Vestal, Port Dickinson and the city of Binghamton were called at approximately 10:30 p.m. Wednesday to 115 Montgomery St., according to Binghamton Fire Chief Daniel Thomas.



Another immediate need was a water supply. One fire hydrant was found two blocks away to which, firefighters had to run a 5-inch line from the fireground to the lone fire hydrant to supply water.


"Just with the large volume of fire and really no exposures, it reached the point of just the safety of the firefighters and keeping them and the equipment back," said Fire Chief Thomas.

Chief Thomas said crews were forced to take a defensive approach to fighting the fire, meaning they'll allow it to burn itself out, while ensuring it doesn't spread to other buildings. Chief Thomas said the fire could burn well into Thursday morning.

It was the only approach, Chief Thomas said, because of the fire's intensity and the building's location. Just one road leads to the warehouse. 

Fire Chief Thomas said there were reports of people inside the building squatting but didn't think there was anyone inside at the time of the fire. 

"When the first crews arrived there was heavy smoke," said Binghamton Fire Marshal Daniel Eggleston. "They could barely even see the building last night when they arrived. We found some dead hydrants that were down here at the end of a dead end road. There were definitely water supply issues."



The cause of the blaze remains under investigation.
